Help hen badly wounded I mean really bad!!! UPDATE!!

When I wanted to get my chicken to eat some protein when she wouldn't eat anything I put in front of her, I would give her wax worms. They just can't resist something wiggling. (in case she's not eating b/c of the stress)

Sorry to hear about your girl! Several weeks ago, I found one of my hens, Chloe, had a huge gaping hole in her back near her wing. After totally freaking out, I looked up 'gaping wound' on here and came up with this wonderful post. Look part way down. It really gives detailed instructions and it recommends Neosporin. I printed it off for future reference. And I decided to get a 'real' first aid kit together.

Say your prayers and give her lots lovin'. Working for me. Good luck!

I second the waxworms or anything wriggly. It's the only thing my injured duck always seemed willing to eat when her appetite was gone. She recovered from a nasty attack. Vitamins in her water, take a sniff of the wound and see if it smells bad--if so, an antibiotic would be a good idea to ward off infection. If she's eating the eggs, go with that for extra protein. Keep her warm and quiet and the wound dry. The Blu-Kote should act as an antiseptic and keep the wound dry, and if you use Neosporin, do not use the type with a painkiller in it. I might check under the wing each day or two to see that the wound isn't getting smelly (infected) from not having enough air.

I think there's a sticky in the chicken forum with a long post about treating wounds.

Good luck! Birds are tough little animals...I hope she recovers quickly!

My Delaware roo did something similar to my turken hen this week. She has thin skin anyway and I think his toe nail got her in the side. He really doesn't have any spurs yet to speak of that would have done anything to her. I was lucky to find it soon after and sutured the wound, sprayed with blue Kote and she gets 1/2cc of PCN inj. IM every evening. It was a large wound about 5-6" long and right where you described it. Her wing hid it and I wouldn't have noticed if she hadn't been standing strangely in the nest box.
Good luck with your hen....I hope she does okay

You do want to be careful that you let the wound breathe. Don't bandage it so it just stays wet all of the time. Keep it clean is the main thing. You are doing great. Other sources of food you can give her is oatmeal, and the flax is great because it also has Omega 3 and 6 with is a good for everything pretty much. Clean water and keep her where she won't get pecked at.

I would take the other half of penicillin pill and give it to her. Open her mouth and plop it in and push it to back of throat and she will swallow it. 500 mg for her is not too much. Then I would get good dressing on her on the area. Antibiotic ointment of some kind works best for chickens I have found.
I would let her would moisten up then I would pull of or clean out all the dead or bad tissue till you have good tisuue left. I myself will then pull the would closed you can use sewing needle and white thread and sew her up. Each time through skin has to be tied . I would reapeat antibiotic pill for 5 days

If your chicken doesn';t eat I take and open their mouths and give them bites of food. Put it to back of throat and they will swallow it. If she looks like she is run down I would give her few bites of raw beef liver. That would help boost her up from blood loss. She needs fed high protien foods to promote healing.

ok so I should let the wound soften up a bit... I will go tonight and get the ointment and then apply liberally until the wood in pliable... then i should sew her up? I have done pleanty of seutures on horses so it shouldnt be to hard... how long until the wound is moistened if I put it on her in the morning... she is eating and my dad said she was standing when he went to check on her a little bit ago but now she is sitting back down again...

check that I had a little thing of antibiotic ointment in my first aid kit... so i out it everywhere all over the wound. what if the skin is curled under on the sides? also how do i remove the dead tissue?
