One of my EE hens has been laying great eggs for about 2 weeks now. Today I noticed the other chickens pecking at what looked like clear goo in the run. My hen that is laying has a drip of this clear goo on her rear so I guess it came from her. She is a bit lethargic compared to normal and almost squats, moving her tail up and down slowly. No one is picking on her, she just sort of sits off to the side of the run. She was picking around a bit eating some corn. She also had an egg in the nest box that I know is hers because she is the only one laying pink eggs. I did not observe any shell like pieces nor did I see a soft shell around the egg like substance, although the other chickens were quick to gobble the mess up. Any ideas what her issue may be? Any suggestions for treatment? Broken egg inside her? Possible egg that did not develop shell slipped out? Something else completely?

Specs:
26 week old EE Hen
Has been laying good eggs for about 2 weeks
Fed 16% layer pellets, whole corn now that its getting chilly here in MI and Oyster shell free of choice
Lethargic
Squats, slowly pumps tail up and down
can run, doesn't want to be touched right now

Any help is appreciated

She also stands mostly motionless unless I am trying to get near her. Closes her eyes until hears something. Tail is no longer going up and down, she sort of squat/hunches with back/base of tail up in a hunched look. I did just see her poo and it looked normal...she kept "pushing" and I could see what looked somewhat white and foamy at vent for a second after her poo.

Any advise?

Exactly what my bluebelle Bella does when she's got a soft shelled egg stuck. It has always passed eventually, but I have had a couple break inside her and this sounds like what's happened to your girl.

You need to beware that she hasn't developed an infection from the broken egg contents inside her - and it does sound like she might have done. A vet can prescribe antibiotics if she has, Baytril most probably, and some anti-inflammatories. Bella had this happen once and she was fine after the course of medication.

Good luck

Ok thanks for the name of the meds... she is back to her usual self today but I will still call the vet and see if I cant get some antibiotics in her. Thanks again everyone
