My Texas Red production hen had a messy vent area. I gave her a Epson salt soak and sprayed Ventricyn antimicrobial on it. She has not laid egg in 2 days. Could she be egg bound as she is pretty much daily layer? I tried to check but she acted like it was painful or uncomfortable. Please let me know what this is? I'm a year into chicken keeping and I've been through splay leg, wet and dry pox, bumblefoot and a pure respiratory issue with a few in my flock. I've received great info and training from this site. Nothing really prepares you for chickens even with alot of research. Thank you in advance!

Are those clumps of poop or lice nits at the base of her feathers? I'd check for lice/mites while you are inspecting her.

How is she acting? Lethargic, off food, hunched up, etc.?

If she's not laid eggs and should have, then I'd give her 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 now, then once daily for a week. See if this helps her expel and egg or lash material.

OK is that regular supplements or specific to chickens... I should treat all for mites/lice if she has that? What is best for that? How do I know?

You can find calcium citrate+D3 at stores like walmart, cvs, etc.

IF you do see lice or mites on her, it's usually best to treat the whole flock and housing with a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust.

Thank you. I haven't seen lice yet but may treat them all and coop runs with the Elector PSP most chicken folks say it is effective and has no egg withdrawal. I clean coop daily and I use construction sand in my coop. I use first Saturday lime each month in coop and run. Finally I use Buff Cluck herbs in their food always and sprinkle in nesting boxes. We have so many wild birds though that live in our yard' trees and brush. I have dust bath with DE (food grade) in with sand, soil and some wood ash. I also have 2 water stations with hydro hen electrolytes and probiotics that they can chose to drink from freely along with 2 plain water stations for 11 chickens. They all love it.

I was hoping those things would prevent most of the issues I read about when researching prior to getting chickens a year ago.
PS.....
Ruth is pepping up some from the nutridrench and vetricyn spray i did last 2 days. I got the calcium citrate+D3 so we will see if she starts laying again. I'm praying she pulls through and will keep on helping her. Will update!
