Do not feel dumb.

At the end of the day, it should look like your chicken has a boob. That is the crop. Just do not apply too much pressure to it, or the chicken could regurgitate.

So you were right, I guess. I freaked all out and this morning his comb is all red again. What a relief thanks

No problem. I think it is due to his hormones. They seem to have quite a temper when their combs are discolored. Each morning I check my big roo's comb to see if it is safe to pet him when he comes through the pop door (assuming that the coloration is directly related to hormones). Most usually, the answer is no. But it is almost always safe for me to give him bedtime snuggles.
