Makes sense. The ducks are hard-wired to react to anything flying around overhead as if it is a predator, like a hawk, and seek safety.

The side benefit is that you have taught them to take shelter when they see a predator. My hens do it instinctively (hide under something close by when they see a predator in the sky) but my ducks just tilt their heads and get afraid (very afraid) . I need to teach them fear = take shelterI have tried everything from lasers... speed boats for the pond...
The only thing that works reliably to get my ducks out of the pond and into the coop is a drone. Literally.
I fly it out over the pond... and the ducks are scarred of it, they get out and go to bed every day... the drone guiding them to the coop.
It takes practice and isn't for 'beginner' drone operators, but it works! A small 50$ mini drone investment can solve this problem, at least it did for me!
