I'll give it a try. I'm going out now. They are roosting but just now got the meds. I thought about hiding it in a veg, like a pea or corn kernel. I'll let you know. I bought 11 adult hens 1 1/2 yrs ago. Lost 1 here or there for unknown reasons. Now have 5. Hatched 30 eggs this spring. Lost 1 of them recently at 3 mo old. Been battling lice with the older hens, had a very bad case of roundworms. The dogs have fleas that Frontline at every 3 weeks can't keep up with. Went on vacation to Maine. Picked up the dogs from a kennel near us. Been trying to get rid of a staff infection on the Australian Shepherd for 6 wks now that he apparently got there. He has to go back to the vet. Rescued a very thin cat only to have her have 5 kittens under our bed. Trying to figure out how to give my feathered friends a pill has nearly sent me over the edge. If I make it back I'll let you know. lol
The cecal worm is host to the protozoa that causes blackhead. After treating with metronidazole for the protozoa, I recommmend worming with valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer or safeguard liquid goat wormer to kill both the cecal and roundworms for all your birds. Keep your chickens seperated from your turkey's.
How long after treating with Metronidazole do I start with the Valbazen? They are separated. It's just unbelievable how we are/have been combating everything, worms, lice, mites, now blackhead. I'm wondering if where we live has anything to do with it. We've lived here 10yrs. We are down in a gully, 350 ft from the bottom of one hill to the other (East to West), a smallish creek at the base of the Eastern side. We don't see the sun until 10:45am and we lose it at 6pm. Moss grows everywhere. A very long time ago this used to be a hog farm. In 1980 a flash flood washed all the dirt from here and new was brought in from someplace. Gardens grow well, Fruit trees, not so much. Need more sun. I don't walk around wiping butts but I do keep things clean. Coop, water er, feed stations. It's crazy!
Anyway, I have read several posts by you saying the same things about worms, worm er and dosages. Thank you. Sue
An update on giving turkeys pills. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha.
Well, now that didn't turn out well. Chuck, Huck and Rosie do not like bread. With or without peanut butter. Grapes worked briefly. Chuck, the visibly sick one got all his meds, Rosie got most of hers. Huck, well, he likes being the dominate one since Chuck has stepped down. No one has any ideas? I hate to have to wrangle them down, pry open a beak. Rosie is so upset with me for spending so much time with Chuck. She stands right next to me nagging me every minute, thinking I'm stealing her man.
