HELP!! How to begin deworming process. Found something alarming

Hello all, so today that I went out to let my chickens out, I saw one of my chickens poop and something caught my eye and upon further inspection I found a worm!!! I need help classifying it and help on how to treat it as I have heard that worms can kill chickens. Please note that I have been completely unaware that I have to deworm chickens twice a year and in fact never have as this is my first full year having chickens. I want to deworm as fast as possible before I start bringing out my new chicks. I'm also guessing I would have to treat both cages as they are next to each other one with silkie chicks and pheasants and the other with adult chickens. Please help!! (Please note that the worm is in rubbing alcohol in case of anything)

That is a large round worm. Round worms are the most common ones in chickens, and the ones most easily seen without a microscope, but you cannot see the worm eggs. There is no law that requires treating for worms. Some never treat unless a chicken seems sick. Some worm once a year or twice a year, or more often depending on climate. Most chickens have some worms if they have ever touched soil. A fecal float by a vet on several fresh droppings can tell you if there are more types of worms in the stool. These can cost $15-45, depending on whether your vet will do one without seeing the patient.
To treat most worms in chickens, Valbazen or SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer or Equine paste will take care of them. Dosage is 1/2 tsp of Valbazen for a 5 pound hen--a little more or less depending on their weight once and repeat in 10-14 days. SafeGuard dosage is 0.25 ml per pound of weight (a 5 pound hen gets 1.25 ml) once and again in 10 days. For more severe types of worms, treat for 3-5 days. Throw out eggs for 14 days after last dose for any wormer.
For only round worms, piperazine or Wazine 17 will treat them. Add 1 ounce of Wazine to a gallon of water, available for 1 day.

Yep that is a Roundworm.
I'd get the whole flock started on a wormer today.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

$15 for a float at my vet. I would have it done just to make sure you are treating for ALL of your worms at one time.. since not all wormers are effective on all worms.

Avoid myths for treatment... DE or pumpkin do NOT work as wormer.
