So I have an egg under my broody that pipped early this morning. 2 days ago it got cracked and I repaired it with some packing tape. I didn't have any wax to use and packing tape was the only tape I had besides duct tape. Anyways, the chick has made a pretty good hole so far and it looks like it is close to zipping. I am needing to remove the tape as it covers a pretty good portion of the center of the egg. I am having a pretty difficult time removing the tape without pulling off small portions of the egg at the same time. I instantly stopped after the first tiny piece came off with it. Any advice would be great as the chick should be hatching soon and I don't want it to get stuck because of the tape.

I had the same issue a couple years ago and the chick actually zipped its way AROUND the tape! I took a pic, I’ll try to find it, I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know exactly where your tape is on the egg...can you post a pic? See if the chick can get out on its own. If it can’t you could always take the top of the shell off AFTER the chicks already starts to zip IF it gets stuck at the tape part. They can be pretty miraculous!

I had used packing tape, as well. And sure enough overnight the chick got out on his own! Pics below...

I watched the egg like a hawk all day yesterday waiting for it to zip. I cut away as much of the tape as I could, which wasn't very much at all. Once the chick started to zip around 10 last night, I kept checking it every 5 minutes in case it needed any assistance. I went back around 10:45 last night with a flashlight and my husband to help assist if I needed to. The chick had zipped all the way up to the point of where the tape started. It was chirping like crazy so I carefully scooped the egg up in my hand to try and remove the tapen As soon as I picked it up it forced its way out of the shell. The chick actually hatched in my hand. Definitely one of The coolest things I've ever experienced. The egg just folded in half like a plastic egg would do. So at that moment I placed the chick back under mama and went to bed. I checked back again this morning and this little cutie was hopping around and chirping. Thanks for the advice and help everyone! I know now from experience to not use packing tape again and will definitely stick with wax lol.
