I set the trap and catched a skunk who might killed one of my hens last week. I wanted to release him miles away. But when I carried the trap, I smeeled the odor. I had to give up and ran away. I had a BBQ party this afternoon, but I think I have to cancell that. How do you deal with the skunk you cathed?

If you're going to move it, try covering the trap with a heavy cloth so it can't see you. This will help relax it. You could try to get some animal control out there to move it. I wouldn't recomend shooting it, but if you do, know that there is a good chance that it will spray once/while it dies.

Also, be aware that any skunk sent will re-hydrate when it rains. So if it sprays, its not just once, but several times after that you will have to deal with it.

Throw an old blanket or tarp over the trap (it is a live trap, right?) pick it up and put it in a pickup (not your car). Drive someplace and set the trap and tarp on the ground away from your vehicle. Using a long stick slide the tarp back until one of the trap is uncovered and then use the stick to release and raise that end of the trap.

If you have to shoot a skunk that has been trapped it is best to shoot him where the back bone connects to the neck. This kills him instantly and prevents him from raising his tail to spray. He must raise his tail to spray. Not a pretty thing to do, but sometimes its necessary.

Put a cloth over the trap so that it covers the sides too - slowly pick up the trap and carry it over to a large barrel or something that can hold enough water to cover the trap - put the trap into the water and drown the skunk - if you don't have a large barrel then put a plastic hose - one that can fit over the exhaust pipe of you car - connect the pipe to the exhaust pipe and start the car - put the other end so that the exhaust goes into the trap - it would be good if you can get the trap into a large plastic garbage bag but that might not be too easy - if the above methods don't suit you can tie a rope to the trap after covering it and drag it away from your house and coop and then shoot it - if you want to release it alive then you need a pickup truck to carry the covered trap with the skunk someplace - and finally you can poison the skunk and you don't have to worry about it anymore - take your pick - some people say that if you grab a skunk by the tail and lift it up it can't spray because it needs to have it's back legs on the ground - I'm to chicken to try that - need to see it done first before I would try that - if someone ever did that please let us know - have a good one - JoePa
