You have to have a permit from the FDA to have them. That is because they can be carriers of the bubonic plague.

At one time there was a big market exporting them to Japan as pets.
Really? I had two that I bought from a legit pet store here in Missouri. There were no permits or restrictions but you couldn't buy one and take it to Kansas because they are native species there.
I actually had a flying squirrel at the time that was confiscated because they are native to Missouri.
They didn't say anything about the prairie dogs.
 
I can't believe it's almost time to sleep with a window open!
