Is that the fox or just a sample photo? If its your fox, its pretty lean looking and badly coated.

I would use a chicken leg or two from the store, no sense using your hens! People often give away roosters on Craig's List.

It takes a very brave fox to even come onto the same property as my dogs, bonafide predator control dogs. One of my Tibetan Mastiff girls caught a fox, chomped it once over the back, by the shoulders, and it was a goner. Another time, she took out a 6 month old coyote who was stalking my goats.

Only a few of my dogs are trustworthy amongst the chickens but I don't let most of them around the birds because its too much of a temptation especially for the girls. The boys are less predatorial and one male I have chases the foxes and coyotes off but will not kill them, I think he really is a reincarnated Buddhist!

We lock up our chickens at night. If we are having a skunk or fox or coyote problem, we will bait a trap near the coop and put out a baby monitor. I am a light sleeper and I turn the volume way up. When I hear my chickens clucking in the night I wake up my husband and he runs out with a shotgun. It has worked every single time. Good luck.

I've cought a hundred coon's out there - the coop is tight so they can't get in & they are only around after dark.

But this fox - he came by at noon & when my wife chased him with the broom he dropped the bird, but didn't run away. She chased him for over 5 minutes & he would just scoot a few feet & try for another bird.

I prefer to leave fox & hawk alone (coyote & coon get no mercy) - but when they are brave enough to stand down a human with a broom they got to go!

I'll try the chicken legs tonight - if that doens't work I'll go for the estrus.

I have eggs in there now with deer meat.​

Good luck, they are very smart and wily creatures. Its no wonder that many of Aesop's Fables included the fox (for inteligence).

I've got the same issue - what to use for bait.

My wife chased off the fox yesterday with a chicken in its mouth - she got the chicken back but the fox didn't want to leave. It went after several others before she was finally able to chase it off.

Sounds to me like you have plenty of bait

The problem is your wife doesn't keep a gun handy

We had a fox grab a hen about 9:30 in the morning. My DH went out the very next morning, very early and let the chickens out like normal and climbed up in his climbing tree stand that he usually uses for deer hunting. He didn't have to wait long, almost the exact same time that fox came back for another meal. DH shot him and he also happen to notice a second fox and shot her too. It was a pair out hunting together. I have to admit I was NOT happy about letting my chickens out for bait, and still don't really recommend it, but my husband is an awesome shot and spent 20 years in the military. I have to admit I should have trusted his shooting capabilities more, that fox never even got close to a chicken. He did notice that the chickens all gathered under his deer stand scratching around and would look up to make sure he was still there. Or at least it seemed like it to him. Anyway, 2 fox for 1 hen. The best part? It was the first day of fox hunting season!

Here is my plan - I'll let you know if it works.

I bought a package of chicken gizzards at walmart for $1.44 - much cheaper than my hens. Strung them all onto a string & drug them around the yard to set up a good scent trail. I then drug it to the HUGE trap & tied it up inside hanging directly over the trigger.

Then I tossed in a half dozen eggs for good measure.

I'll give it a few days & see what i catch. If nothing - I'll relocate the trap much closer to the coop & try again.
