When I went out to feed the girls this morning I found Little Sister dead. She hasn't shown signs of being sick or acting any different. Is this normal? Should I be worried about the other girls? She looked like she died in her sleep.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sorry about your bird. If you are sure this bird had no previous issues going on and she shows no signs of anything that might have killed her, (in other words she was healthy as an ox yesterday) then she probably had a heart attack off the roost bar at night. This is a VERY common time for a chicken to have a heart attack. I do not think the rest of your flock is in any danger. But it never hurts to give them a once over, worm them if you haven't done so this year and put some probiotics in the water for a few weeks to boost immunity.

I hope your heavy heart can heal soon.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been on BYC long enough to know that happens fairly often, just out of the blue and to birds that seemed perfectly fine until they turn up dead. Sometimes it's because sickl birds try to keep up appearances - doing their best to pass as normal otherwise their flockmates /predators would charge in for the kill. It's not easy being a chicken

How old are these birds? Any new birds or young birds introduced lately that could have caused a case of coccidiosis? Have they ever been dewormed, checked carefully for mites? Those are common problems you can consider and rule out with the other birds.

We're glad to have you.

Are all he others acting normal? If they are, I would suspect something like a heart attack. Unfortunately, chickens do occasionally die for no apparent reason. Hopefully, it isn't something contagious.
