Help...I have a "Splitting" headache now!

Oh, my goodness, you mean I got it right?

See, miracles DO happen

But your Punnett square looks way more classy than my gobbledy-gook explanation

Thank you, trying not to sound any dumber here. It looks like there is the possibility of being able to tell visually if a male offspring is carrying the midnight split right? If not it would appear the same as a normal Purple, if it carries the split it could appear darker right. What about the hens, do you think there would be any visible difference between them?

I don't believe you would be able to tell the difference between the boys or the girls. Only breeding would confirm what they are.

Gobbledy-gook or not, you are GOOD! Lots better than me.

You are very sweet to say so

But mostly I have just been reading everything I could get my hands on ever since I accidentally ended up with the first batch of eggs, and sometimes I can get lucky and remember or relocate the stuff I read

I'm incredibly grateful for the folks that are kind enough to share their expertise here and over at the UPA forum, otherwise I'd never have managed to hatch a single chick and would probably have given up in despair by now. We really do have a wonderful Pea community.

Thinking back to the opening of this brain-teaser you have given us

you also mentioned the hen looks like she must be Black Shoulder, and the male looks both BS and pied

So it sounds as though the chicks would be BS, and might also carry genes for some version of split to pied and/or white, depending on what pied/white genes dad is carrying (and who knows, maybe mom too?).

I'm thinking any hen chicks will be very light colored, and you will be examining the backs of their necks with a magnifying glass and camera trying to figure it out

And sending us pictures

that will be the most fun part

We can spend the rest of the winter debating what color the babies are

I also thought the write-up from Legg's was fascinating, especially that the Midnight first showed up in BS birds, and they had to breed for awhile to get striped wings in Midnight.
