Help I have a sunburn!!

Cut tomatoes work well too. Cut a tomato in half and rub it over the sunburned areas. A little on the messy side but it helps.

Hope you are better soon. I'm very pale and once fell asleep in the sun and burned so badly on my back I blistered all over.

I use aloe first.

To those who mentioned Noxema, I imagine they learned the way my friend and I did. When we were teens we were in Nevada, and we got stuck on the lake in a boat...in bathing suits. We got the boat going again, but not before we got really bad, head to foot, burns.

When we got back to the hotel we couldn't bend our limbs and were miserable. We had Noxema, it seemed like a good idea at the time, and we put it on. It helped....a lot. But we still had serious burns, no way to get around it.

I'm so sorry about your burn.

I hope that it heals quickly now.

When I spent a semester studying in Costa Rica I went to a pool for about 8 hours without any protection at all. My Costa Rican 'mama' made me put plain old cooking cornstarch on it. I thought it was just a silly Costa Rican home remedy (they have a lot like putting toothpaste on burns--DON'T EVER do it) but let her coat me anyway, and that was the best thing I've ever used! It took the heat out. About every 30-45 minutes I'd put more on, and I looked silly but it was better than the alternative.

BTW, I think the reason why the red cross mentions not putting pure Aloe on a burn now is because it actually traps the heat of a sunburn in and causes more damage under the skin. It is not good to put anything that coats a burn until the heat of it is out. I'm sure the aloe is fine after the first 24-48 hours. Just a guess!

clarke, that makes alot of sense....might be why we don't use butter or whatever else it was that our grandparents always chased us around with if they couldn't find the aloe. It trapped the heat!

Someone else mentioned aloe taking the sting out of nettles and wasp stings.....wasn't aware that it did that, too! I've heard of wetting tobacco and putting it on the sting, but never tried it...nothing seemed to work to take that pain away except time!!

Erica, hope you're feeling better by now, regardless! Thanks to you (and your poor burn), I have lots more info to put into my "sunburn bank"!!

The tobacco has an enzyme in it that breaks down protein so that's how it helps(as does meat tenderizer). I always use tobacco. I wet it, squeeze out the water and put it on the sting and cover with a band- aid. It usually works in about 30min-1hr.

Goodness, I'm filled with just a wealth of knowledge tonight! I'm really not a know-it-all, though I do sound like one online! If only I knew more about my chickies!

Preparation H CREAM, NOT ointment will take the burn out almost immediately AND will keep you from peeling. If its a bad burn you peel slightly. My grandmother used it on me when I was little. I burn at least one good time every Spring, out fishing usually, and this is what I ALWAYS use. You can get the store brand that is cheaper and it does the same thing. Try it, it really works and doesn't leave you sticky, stinky or anything. If your skin absorbs it up quickly, reapply it again.

Noxema works, it takes the burn out atleast. We always put toothpaste on our burns from cooking, and that works too, it seems like it would hurt, but it's the best.

Aspirin every 6 hrs. for the first 48 hrs. of a sunburn. I had a severe sunburn once and went to my Dr. and he told me to do the aspirin thing and also a lukewarm bath with lots of baking soda helps the burn and curb peeling. The Aspirin helps to speed up the process of the skin sending up melamine (the pigment that makes you look tan) to the surface of the skin making you less likely to peel and tan up faster. Good luck

Last year we took the boat out and the fuel line burst so we got stuck, I am very fair skinned and I had to use burn cream all over the top half of my body. You would have thought I would have learned but no I planted my flower bed this weekend and didn't think about sunscreen it was beautiful out. So now I have a sunburn on my back also.
