They started crawling on my hand when I just started to feed the baby girl sparrow (one we just acquired at 11 today). I dusted it with DE being careful not to get her head. It was sitting 3 feet away from my other healthy teenage sparrow. I KNOW VERY DUMB (I could use other words) I ran outside with it's cage and it in my hand with tiny crawling lice/mites. I took it to the other side of the house and dusted it then continued to feed it.
I then took the garage entrance in the house and into the extra bathroom no one uses and showered from head to toe clothes on and all for 10 minutes in hot as I can stand it water and my stepsons dandruff shampoo. (He left it here now I will have to get him more!)
Left my clothes in the shower until I the hot water fills up in the washer.

Okay now what do I do? We just lightly dusted the yard with food grade DE 3 days ago.

Thank You for any advise....and yes will not do that again (rolls eyes)!

I'm not sure what to treat a sparrow with, aside from DE. When we had lice or mites in our flock the DE didn't get rid of them though.

But don't panic too much, because I'm fairly certain the lice/mites on birds aren't contagious to humans!

I would dust lightly with Sevin dust. DE is a good deterrent but does not do well when you already have the nasty critters.
Wash your clothes in hot and dry on the hottest setting. Treat your chickens with DE again and watch for mites and lice or you could mix 1/2 DE and 1/2 Sevin and dust them with that. Good luck. I think you'll be fine.
