Hi All!

I was unsuccessful at breaking my broody hen Marion. I decided that I would give her a (store bought) chick. I'm afraid that I may have made a mistake.
She seems willing to keep the chick warm under her but she continues to sit as if still broody. I haven't seen her out teaching the new one anything. My Serrama mama had her three girls out and about. They were talking and scratching and making little dust baths.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks!!

I had a broody hen too. What I did was put the hen in a dog cage for a couple of days. Then just let her out. If she continues to be broody put her back in the cage for a couple more days. This should work. It work on my hen.
Good Luck With Your Chickens!

How long ago did you give her the chick? Hens are programmed to leave the nest with their chicks around 24 to 36 hours post hatching. Put food and water where the chick has access to it, and make sure that the chick is eating and drinking.

OK, there is hope! It has only been a day. Your information is very helpful. I thought she was half way there because she did seem to want the chick under her. I have them in their own coop away from the other hens. They have flock raiser and water. Do you think I should keep the nesting box in there for the evening?

Thank you! I am going to try and have her raise the chick that I gave her. If not, I will hand raise her and send Marion (Mama) to the cage that my neighbor gave me to break her of her broodiness! I appreciate you taking the time to respond :)

I will give it a whirl!! Have a great night. I'll keep ya posted.

dont worry,
afaik they dont need to eat until up to 36 hours after they hatched
she will get up with the baby soon :)

I did see her out a bit with the baby today, but not much... Thank you though :)
