Is this only if I keep them in chicken wire at night? Because my husband has built a very strong (hopefully) coop that they will be locked up in at night. Yikes, I didn't realize that chicken wire won't keep raccoons out. That's what we have and we live out in the country where there are lots of raccoons and possums. This is not good. My husband is going to kill me when I tell him we need to redo the run.

We just built it.

As you already have a plywood floor, that's great, but do pick up a vinyl remnant and cover the plywood with a sheet of vinyl/linoleum. Protects the plywood and makes cleanup a breeze. Put litter over the vinyl so it won't be slippery. Cost is minimal and return is great.

There is chicken wire and then there is chicken wire. The standard inexpensive stuff ($40 for 100+' of 5' or 6' tall or so, around here) will only keep chickens in, and then it won't do that for more than a year or two. Waste of money and effort unless that's all you want; I used it around my garden to keep chickens out. I have some stuff for my run that is heavy duty galvanized, that looks like chicken wire but has the strength of welded wire. Just a little pricier!

If you live on Long Island, you have raccoons, and plenty of other predators. Used to have friends there.

Locking them in the coop at night cuts down on predation greatly but does not eliminate it. A hungry fox or coon will attack at noon.

I think you should. It is a very nice looking coop. Maybe it would also stoke the Mister's ego a bit as a side benefit?
