My 5 and 6 year old boys wanted chickens and I was more than happy to help them build a coop and get some birds. I've had these for 10 weeks, I believe they were between 10 and 12 weeks old when I brought them home. No crowing yet! The boys have named these birds so I need to get out in front of any rooster issues. We live in a neighborhood and a noisy rooster could potentially be a problem. The first picture I'm reasonably confident is a hen. The second I'm quite sure is a rooster whith a hen behind him, and the third pic I believe to also be a rooster.

All of the ones pictured are Cockerels.

Dang. Win some lose some I guess. I was really hoping for at least 3 hens out of the 5. My boys wanted baby chicks anyway so I guess we are starting over.

I'm assuming it's the saddle feathers that are the giveaway?

How old are they in these pics? The two in the second picture and the one in the third pic are most definitely cockerels. The last three all have roo hackles and saddle feathers, rusty leakage on body, green curled rooster tails and big red comb.

I am also pretty sure the first one is a cockerel as well. EEs are sometimes hard to tell because their feather patterns can look pointy for male or female, but that first one has pretty long hackles combined with really big comb.

I'd bet they're all cockerels and I also agree that the seller absolutely knew when they sold them to you if they were 10 weeks old when you bought them.

No idea what kind of bard yard mix breed I have now but they are remarkably friendly. I almost don't want to slaughter them because they have been such good pets. Back in college when I worked on the university dairy farm we had a couple of roosters that were the meanest things on the farm.
