Oh check for spurs or raised scales on legs would indicate age. Old hens get spurs.

Thanks for getting back!!!!!!!!!! You can't really call it abuse because of their eyes they have adequate shelter and food.. I mean it's not like the guy was fighting roosters and starving them I just don't think he takes care of them well top of then think slightly older I think someone mentioned above if he is only feeding scratch grains, the chickens could be pulling out their feathers due to lack of nutrients. I've actually seen this many many many many time in avian cases. Thank you phone to manage my money back at least you live you learn I was just highly disappointed when I got there they looked like zombies lol... and they've been eating since they've got here so maybe the guy wasn't feeding them too often let's hope that proper nutrition and spoiling will have them bounce back a little fingers and toes and anything else I can cross are crossed lolSounds like this guy is abusing his chickens and not caring for them properly! If he has a whole flock looking like that I doubt it's just because they're old. Give the hens a few days, with proper nutrition they may bounce back and start laying eggs. Also, maybe you should call animal control on him or something...gosh, what a horrible experiance you went through. I'll pray for those poor chickens that are still in his care! You should've known from the get-go when he raised the price on you that he was a sleezy character. Oh well, like I said, give the hens some time and plenty of protein. If they are to old to lay you could always try to demand your money back, but he probably won't give it, who knows, he may have disapeared by now! But you can always keep them as pets, I suppose, (which is what I would do), or give them to someone else, or kill them and eat them and get your money's worth that way. It's alright, stuff happens. You'll get through it somehow.
Hey there thank you so much turn Appliance in your Avatar's absolutely adorable. I've had chickens for 28 years and I've been through many ugly ugly ugly molts lol!!!! I just never had any molt in the spring or summer that I can remember.. also there were no visible pin feathers growing back on these girls. I mean Easter Eggers and Rhode Island Reds I've had some that have given me a some eggs weekly for a good five or six years let's hope with good nutrition they're onto Better Days. I've never gotten sick instead of eating so much as soon as I brought them home.Hens do molt at age 1.5 and/ or 2 but then the feathers come back and they look great- Take my avatar she looks terrible molting but is normally pretty like my pic. Also molting birds don't lay. Just give them love and don't worry about the money. (My avatar is prolly 8 and she just gave me 3 baby chicks.)
no raised scales with the Rhode Island red does have a Spurs that's a quarter of an inch.... although I had a couple Rhode Island Reds in the past that had Spurs as well so who knows as long as they give me something I don't need a dozen eggs every 12 days you know what I mean but I do want something for my money in a way oh, I'm a hobby farmer but I'm also not looking to just feed animals I have two cats and a dog that already take up those slots...lolOh check for spurs or raised scales on legs would indicate age. Old hens get spurs.
one can only hope that this is their second summer..... I mean I would ask him again how old they are but I don't want to seem weird or crazy even though I have every right but I'm not that type of person! ! The only thing I noticed but these hands is there were no pin feathers underneath were they for a bald that's the only I was alarmed as well....ya know!?!Summer molts can happen if the chick was hatched Dec. or Jan. most chickens will molt in the fall after their first year if hatched in March.
But really at this point let go of your worrying about the money, you took on the assignment, now do right by those birdies! Give them a good home.
I bought chickens from a feed store, that I had not gone into for about 10 years because the lady was grouch, but she had a breed I wanted. It has been 3 years ago since I bought the chickens, I am still mad I did that, but I enjoy the chickens. I still have not been back there since. I prolly only now feel good about the birds. Don't do that to your self.
