Help! Last night one of my orpingtons didn't go in to roost. She was just sitting outside on the ground. We checked her and put her on the roost. We couldn't find anything wrong with her. This morning she was dead. I have 16 hens and now half of them seem "off" this morning. Very slow moving, not eating, drinking water slowly, and just laying down. All the combs seem bright. Nobody looks sick but something is very wrong. Does anyone know what I could be dealing with?

Sorry for your loss. Where are you located? How old are your birds? Can you check for any mold in your feed? Do you see any diarrhea? What are they eating? Do they free range where they could have eaten something bad? If you are in the US, most state vets will perform a necropsy to look for a contagious disease and cause of death.

I'm in Sharpsburg/Peachtree City area in Georgia. All the feed and scratch looks fine but I've trashed it all and got new feed. They have two huge runs attached to their coop. One covered and one uncovered but they don't free range. I did see some diarrhea. I'm treating with Corid now too. Still not sure what is going on.

How old are the chickens? If using Corid, I would use the maximum dose of 2 tsp of the liquid or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 5-7 days. Make sure they are drinking the water.
