Help I have a beautiful Serama hen, she has been laying for a while and was pretty consistently (sp) laying an egg every other day sometimes everyday. But didnt lay yesterday or today. She is in the nest all fluffed out. She is generally a very sweet girl but now if you try to pet her she is a little aggressive making strange cooing sounds almost like a mad pigeon. Could she have gone broody. I collect her eggs so she isnt sitting on anything I got bit twice checking. If so should i put the eggs i have collected from her under her and let her sit? Thanks for any help or suggestions. I am new to a lot of this and this is my first time around with a possibly broody hen.

Sounds like a broody girl. How long ago did you remove the eggs? If it hasn't been long, I would give them back to her asap. It will probably cause a delay in incubation or only a partial hatch but it's worth a shot!

Thank you so very much I just took the last one from her saturday. I was gonna put them in an incubator but if she will do it then i think it is worth a try. Thank you for your response

I have one more question why is the roo guarding her?

Hmm maybe he's a proud pappa. I really don't know, our broody hen won't let anything near her especially the roo. Maybe he's just being a good boy!

I just took the few eggs i had gathered from her that we hadnt already set and put them under her. Well i put one beside her and she very gently pushed it up under herself and then i put the other 3 beside her and she took a minute but she gently pushed all of them under her and settled down again.

She was a little grumpy but she stayed calm. As for the roo she lets him come in the converted doghouse that is our nest house but that is the extent of it. She wont let him near her. I hope this works. I am so excited. I hope she will let me check on the eggs periodically. When do you think i should try to check on them.

Well, I never candle my broody eggs, but that's just me. I don't like to disturb the broody, plus she pecks hard. If you want to candle them I would wait until day 10, if not, give her 19-21 days and you should have chicks. Make sure she has access to food and water!

With a broody, I candle one time, around day 9-10, just to remove infertiles or embryos that have died, then don't do it again.

I want to thank everyone that has given me advice. I MIGHT candle around day 9 or 10 depends on how grumpy she is being. I hope that her being so protective of nothing before i put the eggs back under her means she will be a good mommy. Should i put water and food in the nest house (converted doghouse) with her or leave it out so she has to get up and move around now and then?

edited to add
And yeah she pecks pretty hard for such a little thing she is a small B size serama
