A bit sad and stressed out… I noticed yesterday one of my hens was holding one of her legs up and not walking very much. I picked her up to inspect her feet and noticed she had some slight bruising on her middle toe but wasn’t limping. However today she’s limping quite badly and the bruising is worse and looks like it’s turning sort of red? This is my first time having chickens so I’ve never encountered this before. I’m assuming she broke her toe but I don’t know what to do:( is there something I can give her for the pain/inflammation? Should I split it? Any help would be amazing i feel so bad for my lady!!!!

I would separate her from the flock, and put her in a small confined cage, with food and water, until she stops limping.
That’s what I assumed would be the best option. I currently don’t have any cages, I will certainly search for one. How big should it be? And do I keep her in the cage within the run with the rest of the flock so she’s still with them and not alone? And what about at night? I assume her getting up on the roost isn’t helping her situation at all. Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I do the best I can. Thank you!!

My “hospital ward” pens are 2ft. x 2ft. You might be able to keep her with the others, and for the night, if the coop is big enough, it should be fine to keep her in there (in the cage).

Thank you!! I just messaged someone on Facebook marketplace for one that is 21” x 17” so hoping they reply soon!! Should there be something in the cage for her to roost on that’s low to the ground?

As of today she’s not using that foot at all now. She’s hopping around on one leg. I feel absolutely terrible, anyone think I should I give her baby aspirin? Last night I spent two hours sitting on the coop floor just holding her supporting that leg so she could rest which she liked, but of course I can sit in the chicken coop all night. I felt bad but I really had to sort of force her off of my hand/arm she just didn’t want to get off.

It does look like she has fractured her toe. You can give her half of a human low dose aspirin twice a day. Is her flock picking on her? If not, leave her with them. If you separate her in a crate, try to keep her with her flock so that she won’t be picked on when she feels better. Make sure that she can reach her food and water.

No one seems to be bothering her at all, thankfully. I tried the crate and put it in the tub with everyone else but I felt too bad because you could tell she was very very stressed. I just let her out and now she’s in a nesting box and everyone else just climbed into the crate for the food🤣 it’s still swollen, honestly more swollen than yesterday too. But she still has energy and wants to move. She’s drinking and eating and laying still, but her poops are watery? Thank you for responding as well! I feel so bad for her
