Help Identify Mystery Marans Chick - UPDATED PHOTOS 11/11/09 Post #65

I recently had 4 chicks hatch from some Black Copper Marans eggs I bought off of Ebay. One chick, looks nothing like the others.

All of the eggs looked the same - very dark and these were the only eggs I had in the incubator. I emailed the guy I bought them from and he said he hadnn't seen anyting like this and he has hatched quite a few Marans chicks this past year. he said all of his birds are in separate pens so there's no cross breeding.

Has anyone seen a chick like this or are they aware of how a Black Copper Maran chick can pop out like this?

I have absolutely no idea! I just wanted to pop on and say he looks really cool. Very pretty little chick.

The chick appears to have brown (eb) down with pattern gene (Pg). I know of no colour of Marans with those genes.
There was another thread on here a month or so go, where someone had a supposed marans chick with similar colouring.
Someone suggested barnevelder at the time, but the chick in this pic appears to have dark legs.

I had the same thing happen to me from ebay eggs. Mine was a little more yellow than yours though. The guy I bought them from says mine is a Wheaton Marans.

The above chick is definitely not a wheaten marans. True wheaten marans have completely yellow chick down at hatch.

it is definitly a different breed than the other 3 chicks its eyes and legs r a different color than the others. idk what but it is not the same breed as the others

It could be a throwback color cross. Unless the breeder has been working that particular line for 5+ years, there's no way to know for sure what all is in the background.

That looks like the one I hatched 2 weeks ago. I also got my eggs off e-bay might be the same seller.

Wow- and they all came from the same color egg? Do they happen to breed Wellsummers as well?
