Help Identify Mystery Marans Chick - UPDATED PHOTOS 11/11/09 Post #65

I have read all of your posts with interest and actually I am somewhat envious of your wealth of knowledge. I have posted more pics of the chick. From the top this chicks coloring seems to have a definate pattern.

I guess my question is what is your opinion?

Do you think this chick a Black Copper marans gone wrong or with an odd mixture of genes from its predecessors?

Do you thinks this is simply NOT a Black Copper Marans? The seller maintains that he keeps his chickens penned separately and he was extremely curious about the chick.

My daughter is in 4H and I bought these eggs for her for to learn. Now she will continue with the rearing of the chickens and we will get nice dark brown eggs. So I am not out to debate or argue, my questions are merely curiosity about what we have. I really didn't mean to ignite a Marans war. But I have read each post and I appreciate whatever input you have.

Thanks.

I'm sorry, I was one of the people responsible for hijacking your thread. You didn't ignite anything, I think the 'war' is already raging elsewhere.

IMO your brown chick is not a copper black marans. The chick appears to be a brown based bird with pattern gene. Similar to Barnevelders. There seems to be all sorts in some Marans lines, probably from generations ago.

I can't tell with your black chick, whether he/she will feather up as a copper black. He/she does not realy look as I'd expect a copper black chick to look. Here is a link to the copper black page of the French Marans site where you can see photos of copper black Marans; about half way down the page you will see a pic of a typical copper black chick.

Well, this has been a very lively discussion.

To the Original Poster: I for one would love it if you would update with pics of these chicks as they feather in and mature.

I don't know much about Marans. I don't even have any, nor am I on any waiting list for Marans eggs. But it's very interesting to me that you got the chicks that you got from the Marans eggs you ordered. I'm curious as to whether the odd chick will grow up to be a completely different breed, say a Pendescena for example. Also curious to see if the black chicks will indeed be BCM's. They do look different from the picture on the Marans Club website. But perhaps that is just the difference between strains. (?)

Again, very interesting! Thanks for posting.

I think you can teach US all something, if you'll keep posting pics of this baby as it grows up.

There are odd things that pop up out of BCMs some times, especially with the Marans furor going on right now. It will be very interesting to see how your chick develops!

Wow thats really weird I am not sure none of the Marans I have ever seen look like that! Well Hello From a fellow Marylander. I have some Ameraucana and Marans to I really love my chickens and its a pretty cool hobby.

Thanks,
Henry

In type this is not a Marans. In colour it appears to confirm the hatch down. It is Brown eb based,an allele not found in any recognised Marans variety, it show juvenile autosomal pencilling so the Pattern gene Pg is present. The amount of black indicates it has additional Melanisers. Best guess would be BC X Barnevelder type bird, but not a pure Marans.
