Help Identify Mystery Marans Chick - UPDATED PHOTOS 11/11/09 Post #65

some birds have bright pink bottoms of their feet, some have faded grey pink. some you can barely see feathers if you turn their feet over, some you see LOTS of feathers from the bottom of the feet. Some birds have shortened outer toes, was wondering how short is too short. Things like that.

Yes, Ione I did go and look at the photo section and at the birds from the show on the MCC yahoo site. But what I saw was a bunch of cages, out of focus pictures, close ups of washed out combs and ratty looking tails and no explanation of whether that was a good representation of the proposed APA standard or not. I was not asking for perfection but was looking for pictures of what they should look like. Here is an example of someone asking for pictures and receiveing them:

see post #10. No where on there did anyone say "go to another website" or search for pictures, etc etc.
I am going to start a new thread on BYC asking here for pictures of Marans that represent the proposed APA standards.

Actually, the person who asked for pics of show quality birds was also directed towards the photos of winning birds AT shows, which have been available in the photo section of the MCCUSA yahoogroup site for a long long time. I don't think she ever bothered to look at them, though.

I think everyone needs to also keep in mind that there is no such thing as the perfect bird. Expecting perfection will inevitably lead to disappointment.

As for myself...I *may* be entering a couple of BCMs in the upcoming show. I haven't decided yet, but the deadline is coming up soon so I'd better make up my mind! I only recently acquired a few black coppers in order to possibly breed some blue coppers, after ending up with a few splash coppers out of my blue birchen project. The black coppers I got are far from perfect themselves -- two are too dark, one is too light, two hens look pretty good -- but I know better than to expect perfection in the real world.

Then why do you keep claiming that nobody had pictures to show you? Obviously, we do.

Now see, that kind of attitude may be why you don''t find more people willing to help you. You were provided with the pictures you asked for, but instead of focusing on the birds you complain about the technical inadequacies of the photographers...

Ione,
I asked for certain kind of pictures....remember? I am looking for examples of the proposed APA standards not just any pictures. I do not understand why that request is so hard or requires so much "drama". I am done discussing this with you on someone else's thread. PM me if you feel the need.

You asked for pics of show quality birds. Photos of bird AT shows seemed a reasonable place for you to start.

Heck, I didn't think the subject should have been brought up on this thread in the first place. Your husband seemed to feel otherwise.

Onthe spot. Is the bright pink feet on the males? Sometimes males of various breeds have a red/pink line down the outside of the leg. I read in one of Victoria Robert's books that this was an indication of peak health & fertilty, or words to that effect. However I've noticed Marans males seem to have really rather red legs under the usual pigment for the variety.

Sandspoultry, I don't think it's a matter of people being deliberately unhelpful. There considerably more exhibition quality RIR in US than there are exhibition quality French (or British) type Marans.

Please ione - every other post is you arguing with somebody.

I beg to differ on that Krys. they won't post any pics for the following reasons.

1) They don't want to offend their "leader"
2) They don't want to say "my bird is better than yours"
3) They don't want to see it ripped apart on a public forum

Just to show that not everybody is scared, here is a pic of a Fitch Cuckoo Roo. Other than clean legged which our Fitch will always be chop away.

If you feel the need to chop please post a pic of your cuckoo's

You mean I **DID** think the subject should have been brought up on this thread in the first place?

Steve, nice bird but he would not meet the French Standard, due to lack of shank/foot feathering; and he would not meet the proposed APA Standard for the same reason and the fact he has too many points on his comb. He would be spot on for the British Standard.
We unfortunately do not have any Silver Cuckoo Marans (French or English available to us)
