Help Identify Mystery Marans Chick - UPDATED PHOTOS 11/11/09 Post #65

Here is a copper black roo. Bad angle, poor light, but my "best" roo. Any commentary welcome. Thick skin here. Don't hold back. I already know what I don't like about him, just wondering what other people see, good or bad.

In the upcoming september newsletter from MOAC,There will be standardized pictures of the Black Copper Marans.Just in time for APA scrutinizing, direct from France. The APA judges will be presented with this newsletter at Bellevidere Illinois before the "newly devised standard" from US breeders is automaticlly accepted. When a USA Bred Black Copper Marans hen was placed in first Place in February in Newman Georgia, pictures were sent to the Pres of the French Marans club in France,he wrote back saying the bird should have been disqualified because it did not look like a black copper at all. At least how they raise them in France anyways.

We have a long road to haul with this breed, let alone try to adapt a breed standard to USA Prize winning stock, where if that same bird were presented in France, would be disqualified altogether. Kinda says the best USA can offer,is below acceptable to the French.

It appears that Randall doesn't own any actual Marans. Apparently, all he has is eggs in the incubator......

Unfortunately, judges are human too. And it takes awhile for them to become thoroughly familiar with the standards of new breeds. Poor judging is no reason to give up on the APA, though -- it's just a reason to get out there and show more birds. The more we show the birds, the more familiar the judges will become with the way birds are SUPPOSED to look.

You still have not presented us with any evidence that the proposed APA standard is actually significantly different from the French standard in any way. Gee, I wonder why.....

Krys109uk, Yes that is correct. The remnants that can be found are not up to scratch.
I would like to see a front on photo of the Brown-Red (Black Copper) male bird.

here is a pic when they were young, POL flock. He is the far left. He barely has a few brown feathers at the peak of the black where the copper hackles meet under his wattles.
