I'm sorry for your losses.

Maybe your husband can spend some time thinking about how to make an island for the pond that isn't ugly. Anything can be made in a way that is ugly, attractive, artistic or even natural looking. It just depends on how you do it. You might be able to get some good ideas googling the internet, too.

Long term, have you thought about livestock guardian dogs?

There are some really cute floating duck hut ideas out there, so I am sure that he can find one that works. I agree that treats are a great incentive to getting the little boogers to go in to bed at night. Another idea is to put up electric fencing, it's cheap and pretty effective.

We also had to make some adjustments when we moved out to a more wooded area, there were a few losses as we figured out a system. It can work, it's just different. You will figure it out as you go along.
