Help identifying these bantams please!

Mottled Rose Comb Bantams with Single Combs. Probably were culls due to the fault.

OH okay! I actually personally liked the ones with the single combs more.

Is it a possibility they were mixed with something that introduced the single comb gene in these? Possibly something that also introduced the mottling? What could that potentially be? Spangled OEGB? Japanese? White faced BS? Most of the other ones the older couple had were rose combs and the one I already had from another lady said it was a mottled Japanese but looks almost identical to these new (thinking) totally unrelated ones. I can get a photo of her tomorrow for reference.

Doesn't look like a Japanese bantam to me at all. Those have very short legs and long tails carried high up. Possibly a rosecomb bantam mixed with mottled old English game. I do think rosecomb bantam is part of the mix because of the round ear lobes. They are beautiful birds, and unique.

I am not sure on these. The color is definitely mottled, but leg color is wrong for Ancona bantams, and I haven't seen a mottled variety for Dutch bantams. Either of these is possible. However, the male's rounded white earlobe is something I'd associate with Rosecomb bantams, but they don't actually have rose combs but instead single combs.

So, all of that considered, I think they are either some obscure bantam breed, probably from Europe, or mixed breeds, probably part of a project to create something new. I lean toward the last explanation, but there is no way to be sure.

That makes sense, but I haven't seen many mottled rosecombs around, so I can't agree 100%. It is possible, though.

Since most of the other birds in the flock were rose combs, it's likely a mix where single and rose combs were crossed to get the spangles. Since the rose comb is dominant, you were wise to get a pair where both birds have nice single combs. While it's not always a guarantee, you're more likely to get single comb youngsters from your two.

I've had a similar issue with my rose-comb Nankins. They have notoriously low fertility rates, and the best way to get that up without breaking their form is to add a single comb bird to the mix. In my case, I added a single-comb rooster a while back. It took three generations to get the rose combs - and the hatching rates - back to where I wanted them!

Found some older photos of her but this is the single hen I have. Think she's also a rose comb cull as well? She has the white earlobes now.
