Hi Y'all........

I'm a newbie to the site and to the world of raising backyard chickens. I'm all the way over here in Ireland and in need of some advice.

First off I keep a cow out my back and was wondering how the chickens would get along with the cow?

I have about 100 square feet so I was thinking there should be enough room for the cow and about 35 chicks.

Just two more questions then, i don't have a back yard, I have a lawn, are chickens allergic to grass and do they drink milk?

I'd really appreciate the help, as you can see i'm a real idiot when it comes to keeping livestock, had 3 sheep die on me last month

Great to have you with us. Your chickens and cow will get along great, the chickens love to scratch through the cow paddies. I'd be a little concerned about your space though a 10x10 area seems a little crowded for a cow and 35 chickens. In won't take them any time at all to eat up all the grass/vegitation and you'll be left with a bare dirt pad. I think I'd scale back your chicken operation to about 8 or 10 till you can increase your average. Just my opinion

Thanks for the help dairyfarmer i'm such an idiot when it comes to this stuff, but how did you know my yard was 10x10???? that's a serious talent you have there

I cut the lawns for my neighbours and usually feed the cow that as well as whatever leftover granola i have from breakfast each morning, she loves the stuff.

Problem is I've bought the 35 chickens now so i'll have to either make it work or get rid of them

! Happy to have you with us! I can take a shot at some of your questions. Chickens eat many kinds of greenery and seem to enjoy tender young grass. I know some folks on BYC feed their chickens milk. Mine turn their beaks up at it since they've never had it as chicks I guess. I also know some folks raise their chickens and cows together - just make sure they chickens are old enough and nimble enough to get out of the way of a descending hoof!
