AKC registered doesn't mean much, just means the dog is a pure bred. and pure bred does not = well bred

I agree, and you're not going to find an AKC registered labradoodle anyway.
I vote for Corgi, they are wonderful dogs with a big dog temperament in a little dog package.

I think that I've seen them but haven't looked into very much.

I really think they're a good match for what you're asking for. They will be balls of energy as puppies (which is true for any puppy) but become "sedate" as they get older unlike some breeds (like Goldens who act like puppies until the very end)

I have learned that stairs are not good for corgis' backs
I now have a visual of a corgi going up a ramp
and it is ADORABLE
