Bad news first... third chick was too weak to get out of shell. never pipped. By the time I was able to open the shell and find the beak, it was gone. Fourth maran chick never even tried. opened egg this morning and chick was malpositioned. One of the neighbor mutt eggs has had no movement for over twelve hours. I fear it may have died also.
Alright now, no more tears. There is still work to be done. Two neighbor mutt chicks still have a chance.
Time for good news. Of the two remaining chicks one has externally pipped and is actively peeping! There are signs that the beak is a bit crooked, but we will deal with that later. The final chick is still hanging in there. Movements are small and no pip yet, but still alive. Holding out hope for that one.
It has been confirmed the motionless egg has died. It has been a rough week, especially the last couple days.
The pipped chick is officially out of the shell, drying off, and fluffing up.
The third chick doesn't have a name yet so I am taking suggestions. Still waiting to see if the last chick will hatch.
What a stressful time we only had 1 successful hatch out of 6 eggs the first time round, it was tough. Lot 2 are due today, 9 eggs, I'm waiting for the first sign of hatching!
