Help! is my ameraucana a rooster?

thank you everyone! unfortunately 'Mavis' found his voice this morning and at 6:57 am let out a few garbled crows. We're not actually allowed to have chickens (new ordinance in the works to allow hens) so having a rooster really complicates things and puts them all at risk. I'm going to find Mavis a new home in the country, which breaks my heart.

I am also wondering if my Ameracuna is a rooster. See the two compared. I can't tell but they definitely don't look the same!! They are 12 weeks old. The one I'm curious about is the one further away. Thanks!

I don't know what to say. I bought all hens and as they grew, three of them are roosters! I'm glad i live in the country where I can get away with having so many roos, but I wanted EGG layers not ALARM CLOCKS!!!!..
Never trust your local feed store for sexing your peeps, chances are they only want to make a sale!

The feed store has nothing to do with sexing baby chicks, it's the hatcheries who do that and it is never 100% or even close to that. It's just one of the risks that comes with the territory, unfortunately. Older birds can be sexed accurately but they cost more.

The accuracy is dependent on the skill of the chicken sexer. Unfortunately, it's an art form in jeopardy as many of the sexers who trained during the heyday have reached an age where they want to retire.

The place where I've gotten mine has gotten it right 23:24 so far and only one of those was a color sexable chick.

Yes it is unfortunate because it seems like more and more people who order female chicks or buy what are supposed to be female chicks at feed stores end up with some cockerels just when sexing is more important than ever with people now raising layers in cities and suburbs. I am glad you did well but from the amount of sexing posts in here it seems like lots of people get unexpected surprises. I think it's very important to let whoever sold the chicks know when cockerels show up in what was supposed to be pullets. Communication and even complaints are the only way I see the situation improving.
