FYI Cottontails are really hares not true rabbits. Rabbit babies are born naked and hairless while hares are born with fur and eyes open. Genetically too far apart to make viable offspring.

Cottontails are not hares; their babies are born without fur and their eyes don't open until they are about 10 days old. They are rabbits, they just don't happen to be closely related to the European rabbit.

It is my understanding that cottontails are rabbits. Jackrabbits are hares. Neither will cross with domestic rabbits.
