HELP... is one of our hens a rooster?

What a downer... she will be so disappointed!
He's definitely the friendliest of the bunch....

I guess we'll only have 5 chickens... hopefully we can find him a good home.

Thanks to all who posted!

We ordered five hens and one roo and got…wait for it…………………………SIX OF EACH!!! Good Luck!!

Barred rock females have dark coloring on their legs too and the roos don't. I would have to see its legs. Has he crowed yet?

I have a feeling that this roo is using the sneaky sweet ploy to stay in the flock! Sort of make you love me so you will keep me!

Di he finally crow....How are you sure....I have a couple chickens that are in question as well...

Hi we had the same scenario w.barred rocks and I think it's a roo too. I loved our cockerel too but he started crowing and then attacking us. Barred rocks grow to be large so it could be terrifying to a child. Or adult for that matter! Do you have any rural areas near you? You may try a trade w someone. If you are not into crowing and aggression (he will protect his hens) make arrangements.

If I remember right, there is another way to tell with barred chicks. Females have a white area on the top of their head that is clearly outlined. Males have a white area too but can be broken up and is blurry. This would be when they are very young. BR's and cuckoo marans.

I feel for you. At least you didn't order 6 hens and get 6 roos...that happened to me. Major bummer. I re-homed all of the roos and reordered from a different hatchery. The second time I got my 6 hens. I did notice that the roos were much friendlier and social at a young age than the girls. Just an observation.

When I bought my oldest chicks from a local person, they had barred rocks and 3 other breeds and I asked about the barred rock cockerels and their temperment and the guy was honest with me and told me his roosters were aggressive so I didn't buy any. They sell their 1-3 week old chicks as unsexed and by the time they are 4-5 weeks old they seperate them into sexes.

I had barred rock hens before and they were nice enough.
