I am thinking of doing an outcross in my buff ameraucana line to improve egg color and laying ability. However, when I try to input buff into the kip calculator it comes up with buff columbian - not the color I am working with.

Can anyone help with the Kip calculator or just suggest a cross for me? I have black, blue, splash, silver, wheaten, blue wheaten, lavender and white birds. I am not sure if the whites are recessive or dominant, but the tend to have lighter eye and leg color, so I am leaning towards recessive.

If rather than selecting based upon the photos, you go to the list, you can select "buff"

Of course the problem with buff is there are a number of different genotypes, and exactly how you get a pure buff bird with no black/blue/dun/white is not really well researched.

First of all, do you know whether your birds are E^Wh or e^b?

no

I think they would be E^Wh because they are hatched with light legs just like the wheatens. Hopefully that analogy makes sense to you.

Down color is buff, the undercoat on most is buff to light buff.

ETA: A wise man once told me, if it doesn't start out with the correct down color, then it is not the correct color as an adult even though it make look it.
