Help! Life?Day 13, First time candling!!! (with a video)

I'll get to watching this ASAP.
The very first egg... First few seconds of the video... I see you are not trying to block the light that shines out of the flashlight...
Crap I wish I could explain it better hold on let me think.

If you block the light that's shining around the egg from the flashlight you will be able to get what you're seeing in person better on camera.
Yes I had a struggle with that. I was scared handling precious eggs one handed while videoing with the other! IF I candle again I’ll try to do better. Thank you for looking. 🥰

I’m going to have to follow this thread since I’m also hatching eggs for the first time, under a broody as well! fingers crossed yours will hatch!

I feel so bad to tell you this since you took so much time on this video, but I can't really tell much from the first few eggs on the video.... ahhh I'm sorry!
I can tell:
Your Marans at 11:50 is good! I saw the movement too!
The one at 12:40 is good
The one at 14:38 is not viable anymore, see how there arent any veins? The movement you see is just the dead embryo sinking to the bottom.
Your marans at 17:04 I dont think is alive anymore. The air bubble is too small, and I can't really see as much as I should at this stage.
The one at 17:55 is good
The one at 18:43 is good
The one at 21:31 Should be farther along in development. I don't think there are veins.
"Messy" is very questionable to me. I'm not sure.

You did a fine job on this video.

I don't think it will be of any harm to leave all the eggs under mama, even the ones you think are bad, just incase they aren't!

This is a hack I use to candle my eggs instead of spending $ on a candler.

Its just a flashlight with a toilet paper roll on top!

I wish you good luck on your hatch!!

I set my phone in a cup so I can use both hands. I keep the eggs steady and move quickly. I would never keep eggs out of the bator for more than a minute.

Thanks for that idea. A square cup would be ideal! I’ll figure something out.
btw I’m not using a bator. I’m using a broody. To candle I have to wait for her to come out to eat, sneak into her private run, close the pop door, open the egg nest , and steal the eggs. There is no possible way to candle there, outdoors. It’s too light. I don’t want to try at night because I don’t want to disturb her by trying to take them one by one without being able to see which one I’m grabbing.

Ahhhh... Definitely makes things more difficult.

Thank you 🙏🏻. I know the first few are really difficult to see anything but I guess I get better at it as I go along. We agree on the ones you mentioned. I’m surprised though that you didn’t mention the one at 7:17 (#4). I was pretty sure I saw movement. You saw viability in #’s 8, 9, 14, 15. I’m just glad someone besides me saw some with life and I’m grateful for tips pointing out what I’m actually looking at. My Marans eggs are just going to have to be trusted since it’s so hard to see them. You’d think I’d be smart and only have white eggs but noooo. I had to have colors. I had to have Marans. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I won’t know who is who once they hatch anyway. They’ll all be mutts. Papa is either Albert, a White Leghorn x Red Sexlink, or Henry, a White Frizzle Cochin Bantam x Buff Brahma Bantam. As for mama’s, 4 is SLW, 8 is Marans (either black or blue), 9 & 14 are either EE, BWA, or Frost White Legbar (I’m leaning toward one of each of the first two possibilities), and 15 is OE. Could prove to be some interesting combos. You guys out there that understand the genetic details can have some fun predicting outcomes. 🤣
I will be leaving all the eggs at least a few more days unless I see serious issues of quitters. I’ll be keeping an eye especially on # 11 & 12 as they are most suspect. I might try one more candling Sunday or Monday. Monday is probably day17.
Thank you once again for letting me take up your time and giving me advice.
If anyone else wants to take a stab at this I’d love to see what you think.
