Help me out! My sapphire gem hen, Diamond, was limping today. She also had her tail quite low...

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Sapphire gem. She’s one year old. Not exactly sure about her weight, however, she did seem a lot lighter.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
She’s limping, and her tail hangs unusually low.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
She’s only acted like this today. Yesterday she seemed perfectly normal.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
Nope! Only her...

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
No, interestingly enough.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
I have no idea what happened to her.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
She has. I saw her both eat and drink today.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Not sure, but I have been seeing dark, runny poop around. And I’m assuming it’s hers.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
None, yet. I have however, tried to separate her from the rest of the flock.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
I want to help her myself, I don’t think there’s any vets that can actually treat birds.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
Don’t have pictures, but I can take some tomorrow.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
She lives in a coop, it has a small run, and they also have the option to free range. The bedding they have at the moment includes both wood shavings and straw/hay.

Please tell me what might be wrong with her, so I can get the correct treatment.

Thank you in advance!

If I were you I would check the bottom of the foot and look for swelling. If there is swelling and a black scab she could possibly have bumblefoot. An infection. Then again she could hurt herself jumping down from a roost. Check her out and watch her behavior I would keep her separate from the rest of the flock until you know what is going on but I would also try to make her visable to them so they don't pick on her when she returns.

My hen twisted her ankle after flying off the coop and landing the wrong way. If your hen doesn’t start walking normal soon most vets will accept chickens, I would suggest taking her there.

Okay, good news, it seems she was able to at least use that leg today. (She was moving!) So I’m thinking she just either sprained it, or she pulled a muscle in that leg. Either way, it seems she’ll be perfectly fine.
