At around 8pm last night I noticed an egg pip. So I decided to move them and the mama. This is both our first hatch. Probably her last. Well the chick chirped as I was settling them in and she aggressively pecked 3-4 x's at it making the small hole huge. So I took the egg, using a qtip applied bacitracin to it to stop bleeding and it's been 26+ hrs since it was discovered pipped and 24+ since the attack. It's a fighter bc it's still chirping more and very active! My problem is the exposed membrane looks thick and white. So it's wrapped in a wet paper towel to try to moisten it up. It's very hot and humid in southeast louisiana so it's in an unused, unairconditioned room. Should I intervene somehow?

She probably wasn't quite sure what to make of the egg after the move. We have moved hens with eggs and they tend to peck at the pipping eggs, as if they want to eat them. Its like they think the chick shouldn't be in the egg if it somehow walked to a new place.
If the chick has absorbed its yolk sac I would help it out of the egg. Just carefully pull away the shell and get it all dry and warm. If the mother will let you, slip it under her at night and she may except it back. This would be better for it, since it will have siblings to keep it company this way.

Best of luck!

Also, I just noticEd another egg pipped so if she doesn't try to hurt those she can have it back.I've never really been sure about her breed she looks just like the Columbian rock the father is a black maran. He isn't very aggressive.

And when I noticed she was building a clutch she already had 3 eggs so not sure which one was first. They are all her eggs and will not hatch the same day.

I had two broodies, one on around 8 eggs and one on 5 and of all that I got one chick because of all the chaos of broody hens. Broody hens can be so stressful!!

I'm having the same problem. I have 2 broodies and one started pecking at it's first piped egg so I moved it to another mama who has already successfully hatched 2 chicks and has one piped already and she started pecking at the egg. I have the baby under a heat lamp and it's pretty active. I'm at a loss for what to do? It seems at the point it's at if it wanted to break through it could. I'm also worried about the membranes getting too tough for it to break through, but I don't want to intervene and have it not be ready to hatch. Any advice?? How do you tell if the chick has absorbed the yolk sac?

. I'm on day3 of this dilemma and chick is still alive! I live in southern Louisiana where is hot and humid as all heck. I have it wrapped in damp cloth to keep moist and in the heat. I'm just letting it do it's thing. Good luck!!!! Oh I also dipped a qtip in bacitracin ointment and gently swabbed the inside of it to help combat bleeding and infection till/if it hatches.

I've had chicks hatch half way and then die for seemingly no reason, so because of how sad this experience can be, I would suggest giving it a hand out of the shell (watch the yolk sac) and slipping it under its mother so it can bond before the mother won't except it again.
