Help! Mama attacked pipped egg

I'm going to keep it under a heat lamp until I know for a fact she won't attack it again! She did it once luckily the shell protected it.

Its so cute! I'm glad its doing well.

With hens and chicks like with anything else absence does not make the heart grow fonder.  Your hen needs a chick to reinforce and trigger her mothering instinct.

Do not be surprised or take it out on the poor hen if she refuses to have anything further to do with the chick.
. I'm not I'm prepared. I actually hope she does change her ways. This is Both our first time. I didn't know what else to do when I saw her attacking it. I've raised plenty chicks just never had them hatch natural.

So chick A is doing good. Unfortunately I have a chick B to look after. Something told me to go check on the 4 eggs as one had pipped this a.m. and there it was smashed flat and bleedind from top and bottom. If its going to die, I'm not going to stand by and not try to help. So feeling a lil confident I sterilized everything as I did not know what I find when opened. Couldn't even see beak hole any more. So I quickly pulled off the top portion, around the head and above the yolk, quickly put salve to stop bleeding, and wrapped in warm wet cloth, put in a mug and now have it under the light with chick A. Its still breathing and chirping. What a bad way to start off a first time hatching! The first two already had to be put the chick nicu. Really beginning to dislike the hen I loved the past two years.

I know just what you mean. I keep losing chicks under my broodies every year! And I always try so hard to help them.

We have a hen named Beauty that attacked and killed Eagle (another hens) three chicks. It makes you mad at them, we even thought of just getting rid of her, but she's a good mother to her own chicks. She just hatched out one yesterday.

I hope your chicks make a full recovery.

Thank u! Yes it very upsetting! If she is going to attack them while they have a shell to protect them I'd hate to see what she would do it without I tried to out the chick with her when I noticed the other egg *sigh* so the first one is doing great the other one is too considering. So glad I read so much up on it. The mug trick I've read so much about is so useful! The blood has stopped so hopefully by tomorrow the yolk will be absorbed m!

My parents just left(I'm 30y.o.) to see how my chicks were! My dad used the excuse of bringing an extra light incase mines goes out (ha-we have a bunch, and to bring my grandpa's incubator (didn't know he had one). They showed up at a quarter to eleven unannounced, which I found odd BC he's leaving for work at 4 every morning. And earlier my mother in law brought over a 50# bag of medicated chick start ( I had planned on going Monday) with a receipt for a new coop house and wires! "So we have a place to put them" which I planned on doing just not this month BC school supplies x5(I have 4 but my godchild was in need) isn't cheap. And she also got the feed stores owners cell # in case I have questions or they don't make it to put chicks aside for me. And as I was crying (yup I was crying when I found the second egg) dealing with the second chick, my 8 year old has finally realized where chicken meat comes from and has declared veganism lol. I had to face time my 14 y.o. God child BC she just went back home yesterday and has been waiting for them to hatch so I had to "show" her the chicks! Everyone can say what they want about Louisiana but you won't find more caring, loving people!! I guess the love you give is the love you get back! I must give a whole lot more than I realize BC this has me in tears these simple gestures that are so miniscule to some are great deeds to others. Off topic but it concerned the chicks so had to share!! Who knew two lil chicks could bring so many ppl together?! Thank y'all for all the GREAT advice as well!! Xoxo much love

Sounds like things are progressing for you. The membranes around my chick started to harden, so I pulled it out of the shell being mindful of the remaining yolk sac (there was still just a little bit not absorbed and the "belly button" was still open pretty wide) and put it under mama. She accepted it back and chick is still weak but is dry and warm and its belly button has closed up nicely. I'm hoping by morning it'll be better. I'm trying to remember part of life is death. Just this evening another hatched just fine and now a 5th chick is just starting. My dad said that sometimes mama's will peck to see if a chick is stuck and help it out if it is. So it might be possible that my chick was too weak to zip and mama was helping. I just didn't want to see her turn mean on her other chicks so I intervened.

Sounds like we were in the same boat! I had to the cord on mine! Mine must just be bratty BC she tried to snip at the chick. My dad said "that's what they do" scared the crap outta me that's what it did! I left the other 3 eggs to give her another chance so idk what's gonna happen to them. Congrats on the chicks! Mine is still resting under the light drying and the other in a mug.
