Help!! Marek's Disease??

Fantastic! Not that they have mites, that's not fun, but that it wasn't more serious. I just caught up with this thread this morning and really glad the problem was found. Again no idea what you can get there, but I have used the Sevin dust on the birds and I also found a Sevin spray that I used on the roosts, not the birds. I even spray in the nesting boxes with the stuff before adding the shavings. No ill affects in the birds and it seems to work.

i read that a steam clean works well. i steam cleaned this morning and will spray this evening...the shed i mean. each bird has been treated with frontline for cats as i had it already. there is vaseline on each end of the roosting poles ...i did that last night. i will start a new post re my progress.
thanks. i feel bad for not realizing sooner. i checked too early in the evening before. i even ran things in the cracks and found nothing....

Esther, don't feel bad. I just learned a few months ago what blood sucking insects can do. Never realized that my dog with the real thick white hair had fleas. It must have been for a long time because she looked sad and had no energy. She's 16. I turned her over one night and she was literally caked with flea crap. What a nightmare. We shaved her coat, I bathed her 3 times. Then I followed up with frontline, and sprayed the area with home defense.

It had gotten so bad that they sucked so much blood out of her that you could push her over with a feather! She was so anemic. We got her mega iron vitamins and she slowly got back to normal.

I never would discount bugs now. I've seen how serious it can be. I can't believe we didn't see it for that long, but we never had a flea prior to this. It was awful.

So, don't feel too bad. It is very difficult to see mites. Nasty things.

Fleas and ticks can make cats, kittens, puppies and dogs so anemic that they require blood transfusions... Been there, done that! In chickens, whenever I see a pale comb the first thing I think is mites, second is worms. Never hurts to treat for both, IMHO.

I know this is off way off topic, but did you know that horses can get biting lice that can also cause anemia?

What is the best treatment for red mites? Would it be the frontline and a premise spray? I treated two or three times with poultry dust, and my girls still looked plucked and red. I never see anything on them, but i cant think of anything else. Out of the ten girls, 6 of them have pale combs and look plucked right in front of their tails. All are active and eating. Also, do you guys regularly treat for worms or coccidia, or just if you see signs? Two of the girls are having diarrhea with no blood, just liquid, but acting fine. They are about two years old. Is it safe to treat just in case? Im sorry for all the questions, i am just having so many issues with my flock and feel helpless :( I just got over a respiratory thing a month or so ago and now this.

If they were mine they would get dusted with poultry dust and de-wormed with fenbendazole 10% (Safeguard or Panacur, liquid or paste) at 50mg/kg by mouth and repeat in ten days. Unless they look like they are going to drop dead, worming with fenbendazole is perfectly safe.

Please give her the follwoing combination of homeopathic medicine. She will be fine soon

Causticum 30 + Kaliphos 30 + Verat Alb 30.

in 50 ml water add three to four drops each and let her drink on her will.
