**WARNING! GRAPHIC PIC**
I'm tending a wound from a hawk attack last week, flesh and bone was exposed. I followed the wonderful directions located here by Threehorses.
I think the top of her oil glad was sheared off. The skin is trying to scab over the gland (I think) as the oily secretions are pooling under the newly forming skin. Will this resolve on its own as it heals? Or should I try to cut a hole, even position something (a straw?) so that it does not heal up?
Although many have looked at this thread, I am the only one replying. Please, if anyone here can advise me, now is the time to step up. I would have thrown in the towel long before, but this bird has remained alert, eating and cooing to me throughout the day, and so I keep trying to help her recover from this ordeal.
OLD---I am soaking the wound and slowly picking out the bits of gauze that stuck. One of the bones is looking bluish on top, although it does not smell bad. I did trim a bit off it off to expose clean looking bone, but part of it is a shallow depression and there is no way of trimming it. If I could get a rasp or a scraper to remove the off colored bone that would be ideal--but I can't imagine what I could use. Anyone have an idea or a war story they can share to give me some ideas?
Other than that I am happy to say the wound looks pretty good, even though it is still wet and open. I have kept it closed up under vet wrap (to keep her and the others out of it). Will try to get my hand on some silver sulfadiazine cream and tie a t-shirt around her so that we can see some scabs forming.
