Help me choose, winter hardy breeds.

If you use the breed selector tool on www.mypetchicken.com one of the questions is whether you need your birds to be cold hardy. That may give you some information. Using that tool I have selected BOs as one of the breeds I'm getting this spring.

One thing about RIR is that they are noisy when laying. From what I hear they are the loudest talkers and screamers. So if that is a issue do not get them. If not there is a rose comb varity of them which certain hatcheries do carry.

My vote for that far north would be for Brahmas. Pea comb, large size, quite, friendly, lays thru winter.

Second choise wynadottes. Many colors to pick from SL, GL, SP, Buff, Partiridge, blue, BLR. You can have many colores of one breed here. they have a rose comb, good winter layers also, friendly and good size.
