Help me decide on a stallion to breed my mare to! Update #120

OT, and following this thread with a lot of interest just because I like to learn about how people select genetics with horses, so with that said-- why do all the vids of the stallions all make the horses look very overweight? I know this is a more drafty breed, I get that, but I see virtually NO muscle tone. I see a lot of fat jiggling around, not toned horse flesh. Is it me or am I missing something? (which could very well be the case.)

I think either #1 or #4.

#1 seems to be laid back, a trait that is great for pleasure riding. As far as linebreeding, I'd do some research on if their are any traits from the father/grandfather stud that are known to being passed. Your vet may have some info, if they are a bigger equine facility.

#4, I'd probably not go with, only because of the pricing. If anything, look for a brother or half brother to him. Same bloodlines, maybe cheaper price. He's nice though, I can see why they are wanting a high stud fee. He looks laid back, even at a canter. They look happy.

Is it possible to meet these stallions in person? More than once, I've looked ad advertisements for stallions that made them look stunning. When I met them, they were complete nut cases. That could have been from lack of handling, but I didn't want to take the chance of breeding for a foal that was all looks and no brains.

Sometimes the season of the weather won't display the BEST muscle tone of the horse but I sure hope they are not using these horses as pasture ornaments. I did see a few that has pictures of being ridden and their muscles are a little more defined.

Falcon is beautiful in color and his conformation looks good. Now what about his temperment? Its hard to judge temperment on a stallion online however if you can talk or call to any of the people that personally met these stallions, bred their mares to them and got resulted foals, what was the foal's temperments like?

I agree that Falcon looks like he would be a step in the right direction if your concerns are width and length of back, especially in the back department. He seems well balanced and gives me a good Gypsy "Vibe" type-wise, but I am most certainly no expert!

Good luck! I've had a tremendous kick looking at the "Fabio horses" on this thread. I hope if she has a colt you name him that!

Falcon is really nice too. Why is it that I always like horses with expensive stud fees?

It's funny that you chose a stallion that is related to your horse, that has happened to us, loved the stallion, but found out he is related, on with the search we go...

I would say it is easier with warmbloods, but with frozen available--I think it makes it harder, decisions, decisions...

third one is pretty color but doesn't have enough leg to hold up all that body

I dunno, I feel like I've seen better Vanner stallions that these, but with only video of 1 stallion and no conformation shots, no idea how they move (except for the villa videos, which were...), it is pretty hard to choose.

I think what I'd do is plan a little vacation and go look at some stallions in person; failing that I'd ask them to send me videos of the stallions being driven or ridden so you can see how they move. I'd video my mare and then do a lot of thinkin' about complementing her conformation with a stallion that is strong where she's weak.
