We are looking to start a breeding program. We are located in NE Ohio and we can't decide which route to go. We would like to sell hatching eggs and chicks alike and we are looking for a standard size that lays well and that is suited for any backyard farm

Friendly, good layer, any shade of brown egg...something not very popular that will sell well because of demand.

Lavender Orpington fits all of those categories! Buff Orps are common, but the lavender is not very common. Marans, Welsummers, or Barnevelders might work, too, but they lay a very dark kind of chocolate egg. I find that the darker eggs are often more desired. All three are quite rare. Buckeyes would be good for cold winters. If I were you, I would probably have more than one breed. Maybe sale Dark Brown or Chocolate Layers and have Marans, Welsummers, and Barnevelders? That is just my opinion, though.
Good luck and have fun!
