hey guys, i know it's my decision....but i need some help here. i ordered 8 chicks from MPC and they'll be here in a few days! yea!! however, i can only keep 5. boo! i ordered 1 white cochin (cuz i think cochins are so sweet, and look sweet!), 1 BO (for the same reason i ordered the cochin), 1 silver cuckoo maran (for the dark brown eggs), and 5 EE. if i can only keep 5....which ones should i keep? i'm so interested in the EE....i'm tempted to keep 5 EE and no others. but i DID order the other breeds cuz i wanted them too. i just need a little help from those more experienced as to which ones you guys would keep out those 8 (if u could only keep 5)....and i DO have a small coop that comfortably fits 5 standard hens....and a small run 4' x 8'. and they also have a large portable run 7' x 12'. thanks for any help!

Why don't you keep them all for a few weeks and then you can decide which ones you like by their little personalities?

we all know she'll be keeping ALL 8 after she gets attached! That's the ONLY reason we still have our rooster and we live in town, in a neighborhood on less than a 1/4 acre with 6 chickens, and 2 comnig next week!!

That is so funny! I had to order a minimum of 8 from MPC and only wanted to keep five!!! I ordered the ones I really wanted, 2 Blue Andalusians, 1 White Rock and decided get EEs for the rest. I did want at least one EE, though. Originally, I was going to only keep 4, but we lost a hen to Marek's recently, so I decided to keep five. A family friend said they would buy 3 from us, otherwise, I was going to Craigslist the others, which I am glad I didn't have to do. Anyhoo, I am keeping the 3 girls for our friends until they are old enough to be without heat, and I am glad I hung onto them. They are 4 weeks old now, and as some one else mentioned, their personalities are really coming out. I ended up changing my mind about which ones I was going to sell.( they don't care which EEs they get) One of the ones that I was going to give them, has turned out to be my most social, and one of my most favorites. If it were me, I would also wait to see what their personalities are like. EE are supposed to be really sweet, but two of mine arent very friendly yet. ( one is going to friends, I am keeping the other one because she is a very pretty red and white). My BAs have actually been pretty social, surprisingly, but my White Rock has not.( I had read that WR are pretty easy going). I really think each chicken is an individual, though certain breeds do have certain traits. I also think that waiting until they don't need heat may make it easier to find new homes, or at least you wouldn't have to worry about them going to a home where they may or may be in a warm enough environement. ( I would keep all of them if I could, just don't have the space either)

I would keep them all for a while. One, to be sure you end up with five. You could have casualties. Two, so you get to know them and decide what you like best. If you must decide now, I would probably keep 2 EEs and the other three breeds. I like variety.

I agree with that too. You never know if you are going to lose a chick. That way, you get the number of chicks that you originally wanted in the first place.

thanks everyone......i know it seems crazy, but i had a very light sleep all night thinking about this!

but i like the 2 main ideas here:
1. i'll probably end up keeping them all! he he!
2. keep them for awhile to see which ones i like best
well, one thing about #2 is....the lady that was/is gonna take my extras, she wanted me to keep them for about 6 weeks....so that's good....i just need to chill now and just keep them ALL "for awhile" he he! honestly though, i should give at least a couple away cuz my coop said it can hold 5 - 10 hens....i'm assuming 5 LF or 10 bantams. if i kept 8 LF in there that would be kinda cramped......but 6 would fit i'm sure!

and underground chickenman....yes, that was the original plan, and one i may still keep. i love variety too! i guess i'm just wanting all my EE girls too. so we'll see. thanks everyone! now i can live out my day in normalcy (well.....as normal as any chicken woman can be...ha ha!).
