hey guys,
i have (had) three geese two african geese and one canadian that i somehow adopted. my family and i were gone for about three days and when we got back two of the geese were gone. there were no feathers, not spot where something could have gotten in. we have a barnyard that has a 6 1/2 foot fence, and is buried down about a foot. we live on a few hundred acres, there is a pond about a 1/4 mile away they can go swim in during the summer, and two creeks that are mainly frozen over right now that are about 100 yards away at the nearest spot. we couldn't figure out what happened to them, or why they would leave, but tonight we got home from being gone for a day, and our last goose, one of the africans, is now gone. it was dark, but we looked and called her as best we could, but no sign of anything. we only let them out of the barnyard when we are around and they usually wander to the creek to swim or to our house to wait for treats. neither are more than 100 yards from their home. they had water that doesn't freeze and a little bit of food in their home that they share with two goats. the geese would get excited when we would come out in the morning and at night to say hi, and sometimes would fly a few feet off the ground, but nothing that would make us think they could fly over the fence. why would they leave? where would they go? it just doesn't seem like they would be able to go far, but we have looked everywhere and have seen no sign of them. we are so sad, but want to learn from our mistakes so this doesn't happen again and ar holding out for a miracle that they will waddle up to the house someday soon. eagles a possibility? they were about 10-12 pounds....i personally think they flew out, but any other ideas? thanks a bunch, we are a sad sad barnyard right now
