Help Me Keep My Dog Alive (Vent)

She's beautiful! I can't understand why anyone would want to euthanize a member of the family who clearly has a quality life. I too would involve your vet and explain to your parents that she is part of the family and deserves to live out her final years being pampered and rewarded for the many years of pleasure she gave you. Explain to them how important she is to you and the effect her being put down would have on you now and in the future. Best of luck to you and Sunny.

She has those cloudy eyes? Normal for an old dog. Mine looks that way too. It's not cataracts, just age. It does interfere with sight some though.

My old guy is also 13. Definitely slowing down, a lot.

He's still healthy for his age and I wouldn't think of having him euthanized now. I hope you get them to see your side of things.

What a beautfiul girl!

I personally don't believe in putting her down if she is not in pain, and is able to get around well enough. Like everyone else has said, see about getting the vet involved. His or her opinion could just be what you need right now.

My criteria for when it's "time" is

Pain, if they have trouble standing up, or walking, or cry out and a daily pill is not working to keep them comfortable.
Incontinence. If they start dribbling from any orificie when they walk, they are "done" around here.
Sleeping almost all the time
Tumors that are large an inoperable and cause problems,
Any really expensive vet problem very late in life is a deal breaker for me. I just don't have the $ to treat a very old dog.

If you parents are not wanting to buy the dog food, maybe you could offer to pay for it. It would show how much you care about your dog, which, by the way, looks fine to me in the pic. Bright expression, good coat, not obese. You have done a great job with that dog for her to live as long as she had and stayed so healthy. The breeder too gets big props in my book. Just thank heaven you had what you had with that dog. You have been very fortunate to have such a great dog live so long.

My beagle (Speagle) is 11 years old. The vet says she's in the early stages of kidney failure. They put her on a supplement and prescription food and she would have no part of any of it. The supplements are large capsules and I couldn't get them down her and if I managed to, she would just throw it up. I tried canned and dry prescription food - 2 kinds. She was just miserable. So I started looking for a canned food she would eat with the same nutritional items the perscription had - stopped the supplements and she has improved on her own. She may still have kidney problems, but she's not drinking as much water as she did and not peeing as much - so as long as she still likes to follow us outside and ride in the car, she's got a life with us. She has some arthritis but I've made adjustments for her - a ramp to get up in the car, etc. We'll know when we have to do the deed. Until that time I'll make her as comfortable as possible.

Hope your parents see it your way.
