If you're in the 'burbs, or any area other than out in the sticks, you probably can't legally fire a weapon.

If it's a raccoon, a live trap baited with marshmallows will probably catch it. Be aware that chickens and dogs also love marshmallows, so you'd need to have the trap where they won't get it. Raccoons can climb easily. Apples work, too, and are less tempting for dogs, though some, (mine) love them. I often see cat food suggested, but that almost guarantees catching every cat in the neighborhood, and not the raccoon.

It's unlikely that a cat did this. An occasional feral cat might go after a chicken, and cats will go after baby chicks, but my cats have never go after one once it was about pigeon size. My cats often end up in the coop overnight, they hunt mice in there. They don't bother the chickens at all.

It could also be a weasel, or a relative such as a mink. If it is, you'll have a tougher time, they can squeeze through really tight spaces.

I'm so sorry you lost your little hen, I hope you are able to solve the problem quickly.
