Am thinking as the sand will be covered it will stay dry and I will poo pick daily and sift sand off and pop into compost and change sand every few months?

I don't really know how sand would work. My chickens are on dirt with straw and wood shavings in the coop. Sand is a different world. Maybe someone else that has used sand can help you more.

Where does drain go, to a gray water system?
Might be best to reroute this pipe so it is not where bedding and chicken poop can get anywhere near the output of pipe or drain cover it's supposed to go thru.

It's the drain from the kitchen sink it can be rerouted but the drain cover does fill the whole drain and would then make a wire cage around the drain.

can you make a simple border with wood like a garden to contain the mulch/chips/dirt/chicken stuff?

I plan to have boards along the edges of run to keep the sand in. It doesn't have to be sand wood chips are cheap enough but I have an unlimited supply of free sand I live right by the beach.
