Help me save my dog!!!!!!

Does the dog ever get pork or other cooked bones to chew on? The idiot birddog got thrown a pork chop bone once, and because she eats everything like she is running a marathon, she promptly choked on it, puked it back up and then horked it back down again and ran off. I noticed a few days later that she was not acting right, but trying to get a hand on her is like trying to lasso a barn cat, so it took me a while to finally realize that she really needed some help, and she needed it NOW, and by then, a few weeks had gone past and she looked like heck warmed over. I did have to rope her, and wrestle her down, and have my 12 year old sit on her while I examined her, she had a fever, she had dropped a serious amount of weight, and her hair was lackluster and falling out and she just looked like she was going to die any minute. I had to wrap her in a blanket and get the ex to actually help with his dog, but when an exam of her ears didnt show anything, I looked in her mouth, and wedged in the back of her mouth, where the jaw hinges and the grinding teeth are, was a sliver of bone embedded in the soft tissue. Things were so swollen she could hardly eat, and I know she could not chew at all, so I got a pair of needle nose pliers and I pulled it out, and when all the goo quit draining out,(and there was a LOT), she seemed to relax. I keep a medical kit a and some rudimentary medical supplies around for just such emergencies, and I flushed out the wound with saline and a weak peroxide mixture, and I then chained her up and started her on antibiotics and some doggie pain meds that the vet had prescribed a few months ago during the spay neuter party that we had around here. It was not an easy save, and I have seen dogs die from stuck bones before.
You need a good flashlight and a friend to help you take a look, its a free check that you can do yourself, and oddly enough, something that vets often overlook because they look for zebras when they hear hooves, and not donkeys.
The birddog has snapped back quite well, and I forbid the feeding of all bones, except the largest of beef bones, and even then, she is excluded because she just is too much of a freak about things.

I'm glad she's feeling better. That's really good! Animals really go downhill fast, when they're dehydrated. I don't know what to think about her jaw. That certainly doesn't sound normal. That was really smart of you to offer her water from a syringe. I know that we have to open our jaw wider to stick our tongue out, than we do to chew. That might be why she has a harder time lapping or licking, than she does chewing. I have a bad jaw. With small movements it makes no noise, when I open it wider it clicks and once, when I opened it too wide yawning, it dislocated! Yikes!

As for ear infections, dogs that get ear infections a lot, often have allergies. It can be to an ingredient in their food, something in their environment, like dust mites or pollen, or even to a flea bite. Does he also lick or chew on his feet or his flanks, a lot? Dogs with allergies often do that. Whether or not he has allergies, it would be good to put him on a regular schedule for ear cleanings, to prevent more ear infections. Some dogs with chronic ear problems need it done weekly, others every couple of days. You can just use regular dog ear cleaner or there's a recipe floating around for an ear cleaner that has gentian violet in it that's pretty good, too. I should mention that dogs who are hypothyroid have more skin and ear problems, also.

I don't have a clue what it is with your dog..........just wanted to tell you that I am following this and hope your " Doodle Bug" gets better. I have a Labradoodle and just think they are such great dogs. All Dogs are Great. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

When they had the recall on dog and cat food I started making my girl home made food. I am a great advocate of this. Ground Turkey, or beef w/rice, olive oil,egg and a green vegetable ( Poodle's need dark green leafy veggies ) but it's not a cure...........just a way that I feel is safe.

Good Luck

Hi try liver to bring her iron up and fry it in cast iron as it will increase the iron.

Here is the ear cleaner recipe

1 bottle of rubbing alcohal
4 TBLS boric Acid Powder (can get from a pharmacy)
16 drops of gentian violet (can get from a pharmacy or health food store)

pour out a small amount of alcohal and add rest of the ingridents shake well before each use. This can be used as a reg cleaner but when an infection is noted just use it once a day till ears are clear. I use flat make up pads from the $ store.

Hope this helps it is a lot cheaper then the stuff the vet sells and works better. My sister has a golden and she was going to the vet for ears at least once a month. Now she cleans his ears every 2 weeks and does not have a problem. She figured in the first year she save close to $500. because office calls alone was $60 a pop.

The violet will stain wear gloves LOL

Thanks for the info. I just thought that it could be a possibility, if it hadn't already been checked out. Specially if there are other animals around. My mom's dog got kicked by a miniture horse one time. 2 days later the vet had to put her down because her jaw was litterally shattered and no way to fix...
